"Let us listen for the voice of Jesus and hear the call for life, for abundant life – for healing." - Rev. Lunn

Rev. John Lunn is an ordained minister and registered nurse serving as an ELCA missionary in the capacity of a healthcare resource specialist in India & Liberia. We recently had a wonderful visit from Rev Lunn and learned about his varied and meaningful work in these two very different countries.  John spends part of his time with palliative care (symptom management, pain management, social support, and spiritual care for the seriously and terminally ill) at Christian Medical College in Vellore, South India, and part of his time traveling to other Lutheran partner hospitals to provide presentations and classes for nurses, pastors, ICU doctors, and community groups. Individuals support John through their prayers and their financial support.

“Mission hospitals have a challenge,” John observes, “Jesus predicted it in John 12:8: ‘You will always have the poor with you’… The new challenge is to discern God’s call for these healing ministries in the 21st century and discover how to provide finances, personnel, and equipment.

When John visited us this August, he shared the gospel with us and reminded us that Jesus told us not to be afraid - that where God has called us in mission he will provide for us, and will be with us, so we will never be alone.  And that we are called to be with others so that they know that message and experience that presence also.  We follow Jesus when we welcome all and provide that presence to others so they will know that God does not leave his children alone.

During our malaria campaign, we asked John if he had any direct stories of malaria.  Here is his reply from an email of 8/15/2011:

... I don't really have direct stories of malaria .  Where I spend most of my time, in India, it is not an issue as I'm not in a malaria prone area.  It surely was a huge problem in Liberia - when sadly, so many children under the age of 5 died of malaria or from related problems like anemia.  That is so tragic - 1 out of 5 children die before reaching the age of five.

It also had a huge impact on our staff - I would see that as an administrator.  It was one of the major causes of sick leave.  I saw a pastor colleague almost succumb to a bout of malaria.  It has become too much of an every day part of life.  We need to look at new and innovative ways of addressing the problem - beyond nets and treating the symptoms.  A vaccine would be a very welcome discovery.

I hope that your campaign is going well - that is a very good thing!

Blessings,

John
